Open fires & inglenooks
Open-fire chimney sweeping
Open fires produce more soot than any other appliance and rely entirely on a clear flue to draw safely. An annual sweep keeps them working properly.
Sweeping an open fire
The hearth is sealed and dust sheets laid before we start. Depending on the stack we use rotary power sweeping or traditional brushes, working the full length of the flue and drawing all deposits into a HEPA vacuum rather than into your room.
Larger inglenook and farmhouse flues
Older Lincolnshire properties often have wide, tapered inglenook flues built for a different age of fire. These need larger heads and more time, and are far more likely to hold nesting debris or loose parging. We'll tell you if anything found needs a builder rather than a sweep.
Nest and blockage removal
- Jackdaw nests in chimneys left unused over summer
- Fallen mortar, brick or old parging
- Blocked or restricted pots and cowls affecting draw
We can only remove nests outside the bird nesting season and where the material can be brought down safely from the flue.
After the sweep
A smoke draw test confirms the chimney is pulling properly, then your insurance-approved sweeping certificate is issued. A standard open-fire sweep is £80.
